HITCHCOCK, Ellen S. (BRAYTON)

Highly Respected Hubbardston Lady Has Passed Away.

The people of Hubbardston were surprised and in deep sorrow Sunday, December 26, 1915 over the sudden death of Mrs. H. W. Hitchcock. Mr. & Mrs. Hitchcock attended a family gathering Christmas day at the home of George McVeigh, returning home about 5 o'clock in the evening. Although she had been poorly since her serious illness last spring, she appeared in the usual health and good spirits throughout the day, enjoying the Christmas tree and other festivities. At 4 o'clock the next morning she aroused Mr. Hitchcock, who called Dr. Geib and other assistance, but before their arrival she was unconscious and expired in about 20 minutes from the time she called him.

We all miss her as a loving friend and kind neighbor, charitable to those in need, sympathetic and kind to those in trouble and distress, always ministering to the sick even to the last hours of her life. She was a kind and loving wife and was up several times during the night ministering to her husband, who was ill.

Ellen S. Brayton was born October 22, 1845, in New Haven, N.Y., and died December 26, 1915. In October 1853, when she was 8 years of age, she came with her parents to North Plains, Ionia county and settled on the farm at present owned by her brother, Byron Brayton.

March 10, 1864, she was married to John C. Sessions, who had enlisted in the Second Michigan infantry. She soon received news that he was seriously wounded and went to Washington, remaining with him until his death.

November 30, 1865 she was united in marriage to Henry W. Hitchcock and since that time has lived in her present home in our village. The thirtieth day of November they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage. Early in life she united with the Congregational church and was an earnest worker to help raise funds for the erection and furnishing of the church built here. She was a charter member of O. H. Read W.R.C. No. 78, and has always been a patriotic worker for the organization.

She leaves a husband, a brother, Byron Brayton, and a half brother, Wm. Brown, with a large circle of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. December 29 at the home, Rev. W. S. Phillips conducting the service, using the Twenty-third (her favorite Psalm) as the subject of his remarks. The interment was made in the West Side cemetery where her father and mother and one sister, Mrs. O. C. Townsend, have been laid to rest.

Beautiful floral tributes were sent by organizations and friends, tokens of their love for her and sympathy for the bereaved husband.

Her sickness was so brief that none of her friends arrived there until after her death, and their affliction is too great for words to express, but in this bitter cup of grief, mingles the sweetest drop of consolation - she was a child of God, an heir of Glory, and has joined her mother at the Throne of Jesus.
