Death of Eugene Page

It is with a sorrowful heart that we chronicle the death of S. Eugene Page, at the residence of his father, Stephen F. Page, in this village, on the 5th inst. Eugene had long been a resident of the village, his parents having taken up their residence here in 1849, and during that time his many amiable qualities had won for him an abiding place in the heart of nearly every citizen in the place. Among the young people, whose association with him was more intimate, and to whom the generosity and genial humor of his disposition was more apparent, he was esteemed most highly, and in their memories he will long live, as one whom they may only call to view in the remembrance of the gay, careless, happy school days of their earlier years.

Eugene Page was born in Ronald, in {copy cut off} rebellion was inaugurated, he volunteered his services in the first regiment that left this part of the state, and became a member of the Band of the old 3d Infantry, but his health, which already gave premonitory symptoms of the disease which caused his death, failed so much through exposure that he was obliged to return home again, after a few months service. Although his constitution was not strong and he did not appear to regain his health entirely, it was only a few months ago that his friends became aware that he was really a victim of the dread disease, consumption, and only a few days before his death that his case was considered dangerous, and the news of his death carried a sorrow almost as sudden as if he had fallen by some calamitous accident.

The funeral services were attended by a very large concourse of citizens on the Monday succeeding his death, the sermon being preached by Elder Isaac Everett, under whose faithful ministrations he had been converted, and of whose church he had been a member about two years.
