THE IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD, Mich. January 25, 1928, front page: "George W. Sage, Sr., of Lyons, Is Dead - George W. Sage, Sr., a resident of Ionia county since 1858, when he came to Michigan from Canada to make his home, died at the home of his son, George Sage, Jr., four miles south of Lyons, at noon Wednesday.
Born in Brantford, Ont., March 11, 1844, he came to Michigan when 14 years of age and settled on the farm in Ionia township, where he lived until a few months ago when he went to the home of his son to live.
He had been married three times and his last wife, Melissa Dickinson, died in 1920.
Four sons, Oscar, of Lansing, George, of Lyons, Orlando, of Muir, Philo, of Ionia; and a daughter, Mrs. Julia Beardsley, of Lansing, survive.
Complete arrangements were not made Wednesday afternoon but it was thought that the funeral services would be some time Friday. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery."
SALAZAR, Bruno

Bruno Salazar, 80, of Saranac, passed away at his residence after a short illness. Bruno was born February 12, 1922, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the son of James D. Salazar and Delfina Olivas. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force during World War II. He was in the 389 Bomb Group and a P.O.W. in the European Theater. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Community Theater of Ionia, the Saranac American Legion and a member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Saranac.
He is survived by one son Randy (Barbara) Cook of Florida, three daughters, Susan (Randy) Smith of Ionia, Tracie (Delbert) Swain III of Ionia and LaVonne (Grant) Daggett of Saranac, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac with Rev. Thomas Boufford officiating. Interment Veterans National Cemetery in Battle Creek. Visitation will be held Monday two hours prior to the funeral service. Anyone wishing may make contributions to the Saranac American Legion.

SALZMAN, Charles H.

Charles H. Salzman, 57, of St. Joseph passed away Thurs., April 11, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital following a massive heart attack.
He was born on May 16, 1945 in Detroit, the son of Harry and Helen (Joslyn) Salzman. He graduated from Pershing High School, Detroit in 1964. He served two years in the Army at Camp Casey Korea during Vietnam.
Charles married Darlene Griffin on Oct. 10, 1970 in Royal Oak. He was employed at Trelleborg in South Haven as a purchaser. He was an avid golfer, following the PGA tournaments and a lover and collector of many types of music.
Surviving him are his wife, Darlene of 32 years; mother, Helen of Belding; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Suzanne Salzman of Grand Rapids; sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Mel Hopkins of Grafton, Mass., his parents-in-law, Ken and Willie Griffin of Florida; and his nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, one sister and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday at Starks-Menchinger Funeral Home in St. Joseph. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday. Interment will be in River Ridge Cemetery, Belding.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Belding Museum or the Kidney Foundation of Michigan.

Age 79, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2000. He was born on February 22, 1921 in Danby Township, the son of Jacob and Bernice (Halladay)Sandborn. Mr. Sandborn was self employed, owning and operating Modern Excavating. He belonged to the Operating Engineers for 43 years. He was a Veteran of the United States Army,serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was a charter lifetime member of the Portland V.F.W.Post #4090. Max, along with his wife spent their winters near Tampa, Florida, and enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Delores; 6 children, Jill Sandborn of Lansing, Diane (Roger) Willard of Portland, Lynn J. Sandborn, Ryan (Donalyn) Sandborn, Randy (Linda) Sandborn, and Craig (Yvonne) Sandborn, all of Portland; grandchildren, Brent (Renee) Sandborn, Brenda (Daryl) Merrifield, Wendy (Damon) Mallek, Nick (Jenny) Sandborn, Kurt Sandborn, Carrie Sandborn, Corey Sandborn, Stacey Sandborn, Daralyn Sandborn, Kristin Sandborn, Haley Sandborn; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathyleen (Donald) Rogers; brother, Dwaine (Lois) Sandborn; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Scott K. Otis, Pastor of the Portland United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 1301 E. Grand River Ave., Portland, with graveside services following at East Sebewa Cemetery. Military Graveside Honors will be provided by the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090. January 16, 1928, front page: "THREE TAKEN BY DEATH IN IONIA TODAY - Mrs. Melvina Hearsey, Aged 88, Mrs. Nathan Sessions and George Dutton Pass Away Monday Morning. - ......Mrs. Nathan Sessions died Monday morning at 3:30 at her home, which is situated on the same farm, three miles north of Palo, where she was born, and where she has lived all of her life, about 50 years. She had been ill many months, and the past four weeks had been spent in bed.
Her life in the community was a fine example of Christian fellowship, always kind and reliable in her duty in her home, her neighborhood, and her church.
Her husband and three sons survive, Stanley, of Flint, and Elvin and Russell, at home. Also two sisters, Mrs. Jonas Dull, of Shiloh, Mrs. John Gooby, of Muir, and three brothers, Eugene Brown, of Ionia; Norval Brown of Crystal, and A. I. Brown, of Palo. The later is a patient at the Ann Arbor hospital.
The funeral services will be conducted from the home Wednesday at 1 o'clock, and from the Palo M. E. church at 2 o'clock. Rev. James Brown, of Hubbardston, will officiate."
SELLECK, Helen M. (LINDLEY)

Helen M. Selleck, 94, of Fenwick and Ionia areas, passed away on Tues., April 2, 2002.
She was born on Jan. 31, 1908 in Battle Creek, the daughter of William and Edna (Faulkner) Lindley. Mrs. Selleck was raised by Edna and Henry Foltz. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1925 and married Foster J. Kenny in that same year.
Helen was dedicated to family and friends, always remember birthdays and anniversaries with cards and letters. She enjoyed writing letters and notes and was faithful to her daily diary. She enjoyed crocheting, which were blue ribbon efforts at the Ionia Free Fair.
She was interested in many sports, especially baseball, a passion that continued from her participation in the 1936 State Champion softball team.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie in 1996; son-in-law, Clarence Brown in 1990; grandson and Guy Kenny in 1992. She married Charles Selleck in 1967 and he also preceded her in death in 1999.
Surviving are five children, Dorothy (Bert) Bennett of Orleans, Robert (Dee) Kenny of Belding, Josephine Brown of Greenville, Patricia (John) Currigan of Holt and James (Marion) Kenny of Greenville; son-in-law, Harry E. Orr Jr. of Ohio; step-children, Harry (Barb) Selleck of Muskegon, Karolyn (James) Van Noord of Sparta and Marcia (Steve) Fountain of Ionia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dean (Mable) Selleck of Hastings, Jerry (Celia) Selleck of Ionia and Sylvia Church and Hettie Tatosian of Florida; 62 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; and special cat, “Maggie.”
The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church at 11 a.m., Saturday at the Cook Funeral Home Rich Street Chapel with interment following at Balcom Cemetery in Ionia. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

IONIA SENTINEL STANDARD, ca. 7-12-1925: "Mrs. M. Sheehan is Taken by Death Sunday Morning - Mrs. Catherine Sheehan, age 67, died at the residence, 109 Mill Street, Sunday morning at 1 o'clock, following an illness lasting only a few days. Mrs. Sheehan had not been in good health for a number of months.
Mrs. Sheehan is survived by her husband, Michael Sheehan, three daughters, Mrs. Tanfel Banhagel, Lansing; Mrs. M. V. Rickle, Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Robert Ammon, of Ionia, and one son, James Sheehan, of Grand Rapids. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Ed Kelly, of Grand Rapids, Miss Anna Hicks (Hickey, per lib), of Toledo, and Mrs. Lucy Fox, of Ionia.
The funeral will be held from the SS. Peter and Paul church Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. Burial will take place at Mt. Olivet cemetery."

THE IONIA SENTINEL, MICH.; Thursday, Dec. 2, 1886: "CITY AND COUNTRY. - Benj. Shilton, one of the oldest settlers in Orange township, died Monday night, after a lingering illness. He married, a few years ago, Mrs. Blood, who it will be remembered was for many years a teacher in our public schools. The funeral was held from the LeValley church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock."

Leopold Shindorf Dies Saturday. Leopold Shindorf, 63, who has been a resident of this vicinity practically all of his life, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Laverne Taft, near Howard City Saturday morning. The body was brought to Belding by the Fales funeral home service and lay in state at the home until Monday morning, when it was taken to the St. Mary's church at Miriam where services were held at 9:30 a.m. Father R. J. Kelley of St. Jospeh's church in Belding, officiating. Burial was in Miriam cemetery.
Mr. Shindorf was born in Otisco township, March 36, 1876 [this is as it was written], and had lived near Belding on a farm until a short time ago.
Surviving are: three daughter, Mrs. Adam Powell of Mt. Morris, Mrs. Laverne Taft of Howard City and Miss Florence Shindorf of Portland; two sons, Jerome Shindorf of Otisville and Gerald Shindorf of Portland; one sister, Mrs. Charles Breimayer; and seven brothers, Ben Leo, Fred, Peter, Frank, Lewis and Ed Shindorf, all of Belding and vicinity. PASSES AT MC BRIDE. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Ellis funeral home for Mrs. Sara Ann SKELLENGER, who passed away Tuesday at the home of her son, Thomas, in McBride. Mrs. Skellenger, who was 94 years of age last March 23, was a former Cook's Corners resident. For a number of years she has made her home with the son in McBride and had been in excellent health until about a year ago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Will Wright, of this city, and three sons, Dennis of Grand Rapids, Daniel D. of Lake Odessa and Thomas; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Rev. F. W. Guntherof the Baptist church will officiate.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the residence, 313 East Shaw street, for Mrs. Sophia K. Shepard, 64 who died Thursday at the home. The Elder Early of the Nazerene church, Nashville, will Officiate, and burial will be in Clarksville, Mich. cemetery.
Mrs. Shepard was born September 10, 1876 and had lived in Charlotte the past 16 years. Surviving are the husband, Walter L.; three sons, Edward J. of Ionia, and Alton M. and Arthur D. both of Charlotte; a sister Mrs. Clara Gunn of Lowell; two brothers, Joseph Karrar of Clarksville, and Arthur Karrar of Lake Odessa, and several grandchildren.

Ionia - Kitty A. Shotwell, 93, Ionia, passed away Friday, May 30, 1997.
She was born June 28, 1903, in Greenville, the daughter of Hasbrook and Myrtie Ogilvie Lawrence.
She married Vernon Shotwell in 1922. He preceded her in death in December 1974.
Together they owned and operated Shotwell/Metzger Auto in Belding, the first Ford garage in Belding, from 1923 to 1930. While working there, she drove the first Model A Ford from Detroit to Belding. They also owned and operated the Shotwell Realestate Insurance Agency in Ionia from 1944 to 1972.
She was a member of the Mayflower Society, member of the Eastern Star in Belding, member of the Ionia Literacy Club, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ionia and formed the Antleretts of Ionia.
She is survived by one son, Ellis Shotwell of Ionia; one sister, Wanda Blasing of California; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Shotwell will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Ionia.
Committal services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Ashley Cemetery in Oakfield Township.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Assoc. or First Presbyterian Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

A Lifelong Resident of Muir is Dead
Mrs. Beatrice Anderson Smith, 65, a life-long resident of Muir and a well known music teacher, died in Clinton Memorial hospital at St. Johns at 10 o'clock Thursday morning after an illness of several months.
Mrs. Smith became ill last February and Wednesday her condition became such that she was removed to the St. Johns hospital where an operation was planned. She died, however, before an operation could be performed.
Mrs. Smith was born in Muir and attended school in Muir. As a young woman she became an accomplished musician and taught piano for many years until her health forced her retirement only a few months ago. She was married to George Smith of Waldron. Mr. Smith died 16 years ago and Mrs. Smith after living in Waldron for 13 years returned to her home in Muir where she lived with her aged father until his death a few years ago.
Mrs. Smith was an active member of the republican party and for many years a county committee delegate to the state republican conventions. At the time of her death she was assessor for the village of Muir having been elected this spring.
{Unreadable line} Presbyterian church, president of the Ladies Aid society and superintendent of the Sunday school. She was church pianist at the time of her death and had held that position for many years. She belonged to the Muir Literary club and the Ionia Business and Professional Woman's club.
Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church in Muir at 2 p.m. Sunday.

THE IONIA SENTINEL, MICH.; June 7, 1888, page 2: "IN MEMORIAM. - DEATH'S DOINGS IN IONIA. - The Silent Messenger Invades Two of our Homes and Summons Two Old and Respected Citizens ....... LEWIS D. SMITH. - Lewis D. Smith died at his home in the city of Ionia, Wednesday morning, May 30, 1888, after a long and painful illness, aged 69 years, 10 months and 14 days. He was born at Luzerne, Warren county, New York, July 16, 1818; was married to Eliza Ann Grosvenor at Pine Grove, Penn., April 1, 1843, Emigrated to Michigan and settled in the township or Orleans, Ionia county in 1846, where he lived on his farm ten years, removing to Ionia in 1856, and becoming a member of the firm of J. & M. C. Smith & Co. The firm was afterwards changed to L. D. & M. C. Smith & Co. Mr. Smith was appointed postmaster of the city of Ionia in 1865, which position he held until 1878, eight years. He was always prominent in Ionia politics, and was identified with the republican party from its earliest organization. He has long been a member of the M. E. church, was a kind husband and loving father, and was held in the highest respect and esteem by all who knew him. He leaves his wife, three sons and two daughters to mourn his loss: M. L. Smith, K. R. Smith, Delos G. Smith and Mrs. O. S. Wood of Ionia and Mrs. Heman Lowe of Washington, D. C.
EARTH TO EARTH. - The Remains of Lewis D. Smith.......Interred in Highland Park Cemetery. The funeral services of Lewis D. Smith were held from the family residence at 4 o'clock on Friday afternoon, a large number of the old neighbors and friends being present. Many were unable to obtain admittance to the house. The remains were encased in a handsome casket, on which was placed a beautiful flower piece, representing a sickle and a ripened sheaf. Beside it lay a bouquet of calla lillies. During the hours preceding the funeral services many citizens called to view the remains. A quartette consisting of Mrs. G. K. Jackson, Mrs. E. T. Yeomans, Prof. A. J. Hilleland, J. E. Just sang beautiful and appropriate music. Rev. A. P. Moore read a scripture lesson and prayer was offered by Rev. Alfred Cornell. Rev. A. M. Gould of the M. E. church preached a sermon from the text found in Second Timothy 1, 9:10. At the close of the services the officiating clergyman announced that on account of the detention of Mrs. H. Lowe, the eldest daughter, on her way from Washington, the burial services would be deferred until Saturday morning. The benediction was then pronouced by Rev. Dr. Pierson.
At 9 o'clock Saturday a.m. the remains, accompanied by the relatives and a number of friends, were taken to Highland Park cemetery, where, with the solemn ritual of the church, they were deposited in their last resting place, the sons of deceased acting as bearers."

Saranac - Mary Ellen Smith, 66, of Saranac died May 31, 1997 at her residence.
She was born in Montcalm County Fairplains Twp. July 5, 1930, the daughter of Robert and Martha (Braley) White.
She was a member of the Ladies Aux. post of the V.F.W. 4363 in Saranac. She married Vern D. Smith Nov. 8, 1952 in Indiana.
She is survived by two sons, Duane (Thelma) Smith of Virginia and Brian L. (Cindy) Smith of Tenn.; one daughter, Teresa L. (Mike) Novak of Saranac; three sisters, Francis Varilek of Six Lakes, Bertha Bennett of Greenville and Laura Randell of Belding; and 11 grand-children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern in 1968, five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4, at Day Bible Chapel in Saranac with Pastor Frank Littimore officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Ionia. The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac.

Ionia - Thelma Belva Smith, 90, of Ionia died Feb. 21, 1997.
She was born May 7, 1906 in Ionia, the daughter of Cyrene and Bertha (Lockwood) Robertson. She was a former member of the Eastern Star, member of the Wesleyen Guild and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ionia.
She is survived by one son, David D. and Barbara Smith of Lake Odessa; one sister, Janet Jennings of Ionia; one grand-daughter, Susan and Thomas Gould of New Hampshire; two great-grandchildren.

January 10, 1928, front page: "FALLING TREE TAKES LIFE OF EASTON YOUTH - Thomas Smith, 22, Killed Instantly Monday at Home of Father Near Dildine While Cutting Timber. - BRANCH CRUSHES HIS SKULL - A Falling tree snuffed out the life of Thomas Smith, 22, late Monday afternoon, causing the second fatality in Ionia county since the advent of the new year, and the second within 24 hours.
Young Smith, and his father, M. C. Smith, had engaged at the beginning of the week in cutting timber in a patch of woods situated to the rear of the later's farm, a quarter mile east of Dildine corners. They had been in the woods but a short time Monday afternoon when they sawed through a 30-inch tree. Believing it would fall in another direction, young Smith started running, but one of the branches spiked him, pinning him to the ground and crushing his skull almost beyond recognition. The father's frantic calls for help were soon answered by neighboring farmers and the boy was extricated, but was found to have met instantaneous death.
Attended School Here. Thomas had spent considerable of his youth in the neighborhood of Easton township, attending the Grove school during his school age and for a time was a student of SS. Peter and Paul's academmy here. He had, prior to the shutdown in December, been employed at the Hayes Body corporation's plant, and when operations were suspended had gone to live with his parents.
About two years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Miller, of Ionia, who survives him. He also leaves, besides his parents, a brother, Clarence, of this city, and a sister, Lucille, at home.
No Inquest Necessary. Coroner Mathew J. Bradley and Deputy Sheriff Henry J. Cook, after an investigation, decided an inquest was not necessary.
Funeral services will be held from the Church of SS. Peter and Paul Thursday morning, and interment will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery."

Anna C. L. Stambaugh - Lake Odessa - Services for Mrs. Anna C. L. Stambaugh, 74, former Charlotte area resident, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pickens Funeral Chapel, with burial in Woodland Memorial Park.
Mrs. Stambaugh died Friday at Lodi, Calif., where she had been a resident 15 years. Surviving are her husband, Clyde; two sons, Richard in Lodi, Calif., and Duane of Marquette; a daughter, Mrs. Ray Boice of Nashville; 11 grandchildren, and a brother Rev. Vernon Beardsley of Lake Odessa.

Silo Blast Victim Dies -
Charlotte, Aug. 3 - Arlin Stambaugh, 32, of Sunfield, died Friday afternoon in Hayes-Green-Beech hospital here of injuries received in a silo explosion Tuesday at the Sunfield Farmer's Elevator company.
Stambaugh was welding on the silo about 20 feet above the ground level when an explosion, believed caused by the welding torch, inflicted severe burns over most of his body. Two other men received lesser injuries in the blast which destroyed part of the silo.
Stambaugh, who was a life resident of the Sunfield area, was a member of the volunteer fire department and a scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts.
Surviving are his widow, Carmen; two sons, Dale and Harold at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stambaugh of Sunfield; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Karrar of Sunfield and Mrs. Vivian Eastman of Lake Odessa, and his grandfather D.C. Ingall of Sunfield.
Funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Mapes funeral home in Suinfield and burial will be in Sebewa cemetery.

Just a note... I talked to my mom this morning, and she said what Arlin actually died from was a blood clot.
It seems he was a rather large man, and the small bed they had him in was uncomfortable. He had been doing fine, was healing ok, but his blood thickened, and they were giving him blood thinners. When they moved him, a blood clot broke free and it killed him.

Services Held For Clyde Stambaugh -
Clyde H. Stambaugh, 80, passed away Sunday morning at the home of his son, C. Duane Stambaugh, at Grand Ledge where he had made his home the past two years.
He was born Sept. 17, 1891, in Sunfield, the son of John and Sarah (Greenman) Stambaugh. He married Anna L. Beardsley of Woodland Sept. 26, 1912. A retired farmer, he had lived in the local area most of his life, with the exception of 16 years in California. After her death May 23, 1969, he returned here to reside.
Mr. Stambaugh was a member of the Sunfield United Brethren Church. Surviving besides his son, C. Duane, is another son Richard of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Phyllis) Boise of Nashville; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, a brother, John of Lake Odessa; and a sister, Mrs. Ferris James of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 1:30 at Pickens Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa. Dr. Harold Cherry officiated, with burial in Woodland Memorial Park.

John Howard Stambaugh, youngest son of John and Marie Stambaugh, was born August 24, 1857, in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, and departed this life December 14, 1931, at his home in Sebewa, Ionia county, Michigan at the age of 74 years, three months and 20 days.
When a small boy he moved with his parents to Ohio and later to Wolcuttville, Indiana, where he grew to manhood.
He was united in marriage to Sarah J. Greenman June 14, 1882. To this union were born 5 children: Arthur C. now deceased, Clyde H., John F., Ferrie C., and Pearl who passed away early in childhood.
His companion, three children, and several grandchildren, one brother, one sister, and a host of relatives and friends remain to mourn his departure.
He was converted at the age of 19 and united with the Evangelical church. Forty-three years ago he became identified with the United Bretheren church at the Sebewa class, Sunfield Circuit, Michigan conference, where he remained a faithful member until death.
He was afflicted with deafness for many years and, although unable to hear more than the singing he was always ready to take an active part in each service until the past four months when illness made it impossible. He suffered greatly but bore it patiently.
The funeral services were held at the Halladay church Thursday afternoon, December 17, Rev. D.H. Carrick officating. Interment in Sebewa cemetery.

THE IONIA SENTINEL, MICH.; THURSDAY, DEC. 9, 1886: "Died, Nov. 25, 1886, at his residence in Boston, this county, Jeremiah Stannard, in the 88th year of his age. The deceased was a pioneer of Boston, having settled on the place where he died in 1837. Four families and three young men without families were the only ones who preceded him in the settlement."

Brandon Lee Stewart, 18, of Fenwick died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002 in Bushnell Township, Montcalm County, as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born May 24, 1984, in Ionia to Brandt Lee Stewart and Dixie Ann Curtis.
Brandon graduated from Central Montcalm High School with the Class of 2002. He was a member of the Shiloh Community Church Youth Group, was employed at Pit Stop Tire and Auto in Greenville, and he thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow and skate boarding, and motorcycle riding.
He is survived by his father and his wife, Brandt and Irene Stewart, of Belding; his mother and her husband, Dixie and Mark Helsel, of Fenwick; two brothers, Brendt Stewart and Nick Kern, both of Fenwick; five sisters, Titania Stewart, Kathryn Stewart, of Belding, Brandy Helsel, Amanda Helsel and Shannon Helsel of Gowen; grandparents, Frank Stewart of Lyons, Russ and Zella Curtis of Saranac, Dennis and Marcy Harris of Belding, and Dave and Jean Varney of Greenville; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Kailey Stewart; one grandmother, Barbara Stewart; and two cousins Chuck Jeffrey and Shawn Jeffrey.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Stebbins and Simpson Funeral Home at Sheridan.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Shiloh Community Church, Orleans, with Pastor Kendall Harger officiating.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Ionia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial considerations to the family can be made through the Shiloh Community Church, in care of Pastor Harger.

DEATH TAKES FORMER SUNFIEL PHARMACIST
Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Stinchcomb, 81, of Lake Odessa were held from the Mapes-Fisher Funeral Homme in Sunfield, Tuesday, Jan. 4. Mrs. Stinchcomb passes away January 1st at a hospital in Hastings.
Mrs. Stinchcomb was born January 15, 1890. a daughter of William and Leona (Davids) Bennett. She was a registered pharmacist. For many years she and her late husband, Archie, operated a drug store and post office in Sunfield. Mrs. Stinchcomb moved to Lake Odessa 24 years ago.
She was a life member of the Sunfield Order of Eastern Star a member of the White Shrine of Charlotte, and the First Congregational Church at Lake Odessa.
There were no survivors.
The Rev. Gary Lyons of the First Congregational Church at Lake Odessa officiated at the 1:00 p.m. rites. Interment was in Sunfield Cemetery.
Serving as casketbearers were Theo Lenon, Jack Mapes, Larry Mapes, Harold Hanna, Winston Ives and Dallas Braden.

Elizabeth Stowe, born Dec. 31, 1908, daughter of William and Lulu (Shields) Southern passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; her parents; three brothers, Shirley, William Jr., and Jack; and one sister, Indabelle.
She is survived by one brother, Sam (Lila) Southern of Charlotte; one sister-in-law, Henrietta Graham of Ionia; many nieces and nephews, cousins; special friend, Naomi Lutz; and host of friends and neighbors.
She was a graduate of Vermontville High School class of 1925. She was a lifelong resident of Ionia, retiring from Sears Roebuck in Ionia in 1972. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Ionia, the Wesleyan Guild of Ionia, the White Shrine and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Martin Culver officiating. Interment at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service Thursday.
Anyone wishing may make contributions to the First United Methodist Church in Ionia.

Timothy Scott Stowell, 26, of Orleans passed away Saturday evening, April 13, 2002 in Mecosta County.
He was born Nov. 5, 1975 in Greenville, the son of Brian and Connie (Treynor) Stowell.
He is survived by his mother, Connie Stowell; brother, Corey of Orleans; his children, Tyler Scott and Crystal Lee; special friend, Christina Howell; his grandparents, Joanne Mercer of Belding and Leslie Treynor of Orleans; great-grandmother, Evelyn Palethorpe of Cedar Springs; his aunts and uncles, Gerald and Tamee Johnson of Greenville, Kim Trierweiler of Kalamazoo, Rick Treynor and Chavonnie Waters of Fenwick, Sandy Anway, Bill and Sue Bussell, Ned and Carol Keller, Rance and Jackie Stowell, Babe Stowell, Dennis and Cindy Stowell.
He was preceded in death by his father, Brian.
Funeral services for Tim will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday at Johnson Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Ken Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. Interment will be in Easton Township cemetery. Visitation is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund being established for his children.

Clarksville - Samantha M. Swanson, 18, of Clarksville died Friday, January 22, 1988 from accidental injuries.
Miss Swanson was born on May 16, 1969 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Dorral and Judy (Barker) Swanson. She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1987.
Miss Swanson is survived by her parents, Herbert and Judy VanAlstine of Clarksville and Dorral Swanson of California; one half-sister, Denise VanAlstine at home; four step-brothers, Ray VanAlstine of Lowell, Ronald VanAlstine of Muir, Patrick and Mark VanAlstine both of Clarksville; grandparents, Earl and Clo Barker of Manton, Doris Swanson of Lowell and William VanAlstine of Boyne City, MI.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 25, 1988 at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with Rev. Keith McIver officiating. Burial in the Clarksville Cemetery.

David Everett Sweeney, 10 of Holt passed away June 6, 1997. Harold Kassner Swiler, aged 84, of Lake Odessa, went to be with his Lord on Monday, January 22, 2001 after battling kidney disease for more than a year.
He was born May 18, 1916 in Danby Township, Ionia County, Michigan to Earl Daniel and Ruth Lizette (Kassner) Swiler.
Harold was raised in the Portland area where he lived until 1951 when he moved to Lake Odessa with his wife, Marjorie Marie (Aves) Swiler. They were married on March 24, 1944 at the home of her parents, Arlow and Mildred (Leak)Aves.
Together, Harold and Marjorie raised four children: Wayne Arlow (Pam) Swiler of Lake Odessa, Linda Louise (Jon) Fox of Soldotna,Alaska, Carol Lynn (Jerry) Engle of Lake Odessa, and Doris Jean Sutton of Farwell, Michigan.
Harold was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed traveling and antique steam engine shows. He was active in many community affairs, including the Farm Bureau, Grange, and in his younger days, I.O.O.F. He had enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and had attended several reunions with those that had served with him.
Harold loved a parade and for many years could be seen driving his John Deere tractors and threshing machine in the Lake Odessa and Woodland parades. He was a life-long member of the Portland United Methodist Church and also attended the First Baptist Church of Sebewa of which his wife is a member.
His infant daughter, Lorraine Swiler, and his sister, Lucille Swiler preceded him in death.
He leaves besides his wife and children, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn Joyce (Harold) Compton; his brother, Dale George (Janet) Swiler; sisters-in-law, Elaine Austin, Norma Bever, Christine (Kenneth) Towner; and he will be missed by a host of relatives, friends and neighbors.
The funeral service was held on Friday, January 26, 2001 at the Koops Funeral Chapel with Pastors Scott Otis of the Portland United Methodist Church and Andy Frey of the First Baptist Church of Sebewa officiating.
Interment was in North Eagle Cemetery in Eagle, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either church.
Arrangements were made by Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. (Note: Photo was included with obituary notice)
