SOUTH BOSTON. Mrs. Ida TUCKER BABCOCK, aged 85 years, passed away June 9 in Leonidas, where funeral services were held Sunday p.m.
She lived to South Boston for many years, leaving this community about 30 years ago to make her home in Leonidas, where her husband died in 1918. She was a daughter of the late George Tucker (a pioneer resident of Boston). Several nieces survive. Relatives from this vicinity who attended the funeral were Mrs. and Mrs. George Tucker, Mrs. and Mrs. Ed Tucker, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Courter.

Obituary - Archibald L. Badder
Archibald L. Badder passed away at his home in Ionia on Tuesday, October 1st, at 5:30. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Mrs. Margaret Badder, and four children: Mrs. Jennie Hosey of Mulliken, Melvin Badder of this city, Myron Badder of Ionia, and Mrs. Alice Monks of Collins; nineteen grandchildren: Myron and Archie Hosey of Montana, Mrs. Earl Boyer of Roxand, Jessie, Phillip and Melvin Hosey of Mulliken, Zenas Hosey of Orange, Ruth Badder of this city, Myrtle, Ray, Marion, Fred, Murl, Lula, Agnes and Donald Badder of Ionia; Freeman, Ivah and Roy Wilson Monks of Collins; and three great-grandchildren: Lula Virginia Boyer of Roxand, Elvesta and Mary Maxene Badder of Orange.
The funeral was held at the residence on Friday at 2:00 o'clock. Bearers were Ray Badder, Phillip and Melvin Hosey, and Earl Boyer, grand children; Howard Blow, David Badder and Lenord Bollinger, nephews. He was laid to rest in Tuttle cemetery.
BALDERSON, Fred & George

Two in One Family Death Invaded Household of Fred Balderson He and His Young Son Were Victims of Pneumonia.
At the Knox farm, two miles south-west of the village two bodies were awaiting burial last week and a sorrowing widow and four children were bravely trying to hide their tears. Fred Balderson and his little five-year old son had fallen victims to pneumonia.
George, the little boy, had been sick several days with tonsilitis but Tuesday his lungs became affected and he died that night. Arrangements had been made to hold the funeral on Thursday afternoon, but Wednesday night the father died, and funeral arrangements were quickly changed. Mr. Balderson was ill at the time his son died but it was believed he would recover. Saturday morning both funerals were held at the Baptist church, Rev. Millard officiating, and the bodies were laid away side by side in Portland cemetery.
Fred Balderson was 45 years of age and a son of the late Wm. Balderson. He carried insurance of $1,000in the Maccabees, running to his wife, who is left with four children.

L. & N. railroad, died Friday morning at her residence in the Hackett block, West Main street, aged 75 years. Funeral services from the residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon."

THE IONIA SENTINEL, MICH.; THURSDAY, DEC. 16, 1886: "Marcus H. Barbour of Saranac, who died recently in Chicago, was 28 years, 7 months and 6 days old. In speaking of his death the Saranac Local says: "His Mother was with him during the most of his sickness, and assures us that his death was peaceful and comparatively happy. He died trusting in God, and regretting that he now had no time to work for Jesus. He sent messages to many of his friends and the band boys, urging them to prepare for the last great change."

Shirley D. Benner, 72, of Lyons passed away Monday, April 22, 2002 in Ionia.
She was born Oct. 21, 1929 in Saranac, the daughter of Gerald and Helen (Gleason) Sherman. She went on to marry Verlon “Nub” Benner on Dec. 9, 1949. He preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1995.
Shirley worked at Mitchell Bently for 16 years and at Lyons Chrysler Plant for five years. She worked at many functions including steak fries and other benefit dinners at the VFW-Lyons. She was an honorary member of NPLRMC. She also enjoyed listening to Karaoke.
She is survived by her sons, William Carl (Sandy) Benner of St. Johns and Gary Lee “Papa Smurf” Benner of Lyons; brother, Pat (Jean) Sherman of Arkansas; sisters, Frances Schaefer of Muir and Judy (Gary) Bishop Sr. of Muir; grandchildren, Nicholas Benner (fiancée, Jennifer Cup) of Ionia, Melissa (Mike) Gustafson of Ionia, Ginger (Lewis) Reed of Ionia; Wendy Benner (fiancé, Mike Meyers) of Muir and Scott Benner of Illinois; five great-grandchildren; and special friend, Evelyn Hawley of Muir.
She was preceded in death by one son, Edward Benner in 1997; three sisters; one brother; two brother-in-laws; and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at Lyons-Muir Church with “Preacher” Tom Olger presiding. Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday at the Lake Funeral Home Hull Memorial Chapel in Muir.

After an illness of only a few days, Fred E. Bennett, a life long resident of Orleans township, died Sunday at his home on the farm on which he was born, July 31, 1867.
He was married in 1889 and his wife preceded him in death several years ago. His survivors are one son Roy, at home, and one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Durfey, of Grand Rapids, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 o’clock at Fales-Huffman Funeral Home, Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating, and burial was in Orleans cemetery. Pall bearers were Rollie Young, Ernest Leach, G. E. Peterson, Nelson Haysmer, Chas. Stoddard, and Walter Yeomans.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Fales Huffman funeral home in Belding for Fred Bennett, 80, who died Sunday morning at his Orleans farm home where he was born. The Rev. H. S. Ellis officiated with interment in Orleans cemetery.
His bearers were Nelson Haysmer, Charles Stoddard, Rollie Young, Ernest Leach, Walter Yeomans and G. E. Petersen.

Mrs. Fred Bennett of Orleans township died at her home at 3 o'clock Friday morning after an illness of 10 days at the age of 69. She was born in New York state March 6, 1869, and was married to Fred Bennett March 6, 1889, who survives.
Two children, Roy Bennett of Orleans and Mrs. Hazel Durfey of Grand Rapids and six grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held from the home Sunday afternoon, May 1, at 3 o'clock with the Rev. Ellis of Belding officiating. Interment will be in Orleans cemetery.

Roy Bennett, 76, of Orleans died Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eugene Courser of Clarksville, following a lengthy illness.
He was born at McBride January 30, 1890, and came to Orleans at the age of three weeks to the farm home where he spent his entire life. He was married January 19, 1916, to Elfreda Yeomans of Ionia who preceded him in death in 1922. He later married Pearl McCain who survives. He was a member of Maccabee lodge and farmer’s grange.
Also surviving are three sons, Bob and Bert of Orleans and Fred of Portland, three daughters, Clarabelle Courser and Florence Ward of Clarksville and Charlene Lott of Ionia, 14 grandchildren and one nephew, Clair Durfey of Grand Rapids.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Huffman funeral home in Belding with burial in Orleans cemetery. Rev. Luther Brokaw will officiate.
The family will greet friends and relatives Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Bearers will be Earnest Leach, Belmont Burger, Duane Willis, Lester Hulbert, Ernest Allen, and Orville Bollinger. Honorary bearer is Erme Face.

Westphalia - August Bierstetel, 92, of Westphalia died March 9, 1997.
He was born March 20, 1904 in Dallas Township, the son of Frantz and Mary (Arens) Bierstetel.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and past member of the Westphalia Band. He was a retired self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Leona; two daughters, Monica (Harry) Hersch of Gaylord and Shirley (William) Halfman of Pewamo; seven sons, Leon (Annette) and James (Jane) Bierstetel, both of Westphalia, David (Judy) and Alvin (Jan) Bierstetel, both of Pewamo, Bernard (Christine), Paul (Kathy) and Robert (Susan) Bierstetel, all of Fowler, 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 201 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia, with the Rev. James M. Novak officiating. The Rite of Committal will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Monday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited on Monday at 8 p.m. and Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Scripture Service at 8 p.m.
The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Neller Chapel.

Lake Odessa - Eugene (Jim) Blochowiak, 72, of Lake Odessa died Sunday, June 1, 1997 at Pennock Hospital in Hastings.
He was born Feb. 17, 1925 in Lowell, the son of Peter and Lola (McCall) Blochowiak.
He attended Ionia High School and was married to Achsah Haas July 28, 1945 in Lake Odessa.
He had worked at the Lake Odessa Canning Company, the Lake Odessa Machine Products and at General Motors Oldsmobile in Lansing, retiring in 1975.
He is survived by his wife, Achsah; one daughter, Judy (Marvin) Morgan of Hastings, two grandchildren, Christina (Randy) Schafer of Muskegon and Angela Morgan of Nashville; three great grandchildren; two foster children, William (Linda) Allen of Hastings and Pauline (Phil) Vroman of Lake Odessa; four foster grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Wilda Haas of Lake Odessa and Eva (Carl) Lewis of Woodland; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 1997 at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

In the death of Fred H. Bluemly at his home in Easton township Thursday morning at 10 o’clock that community lost one of its oldest citizens from the standpoint of continued residence, who had lived for 60 years, and since his birth on the same farm. …(illegible)..from the community one of the strong characters, loved as a neighbor, idolized as the head of the home, and admired for his civic interests, one who gave hearty support to every enterprise for the betterment of the community in which he lived. This support was far reaching to adjoining communities, and many friends existed because of the contacts which he made.
For many weeks it had been known that his condition was serious, and his last weeks were made pleasant by the love and devotion of his family and hosts of friends. During the many months of his sickness he had met his suffering with patience and fortitude. The end came Thursday morning while he was seated in a chair in the living room, and while the family were preparing to fumigate the house, as the youngest child had just recovered from scarlet fever.
The work of fumigating the house was completed and the funeral services will be conducted there Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Dr. Paul L. Stewart.
Mr. Bluemly’s widow, to whom he was married 18 years ago, three daughter, Doris, an honor student of the Ionia high school, Nila, who was writing the seventh grade examination at the time of her father’s death, and Avis, who has just recovered from her illness, survive. He also leaves the following brothers: Eugene of Birmingham, Ala.; Herman of Butternut; Alvin of Grand Rapids, and sisters, Mrs. Carrie Meier of Howard City; Mrs. Minnie Swenk of Detroit; Mrs. Ted Callow of Long Beach, Cal., Mrs. John Dietrick of East Lansing, Mrs. Willard Webster of Bath, and Mrs. Peter Christensen of Ionia.

The last rites for Fred H. Bluemly of Easton, who died suddenly Thursday morning, were conducted from the Bluemly homestead in Easton by Rev. Paul L. Stewart, pastor of the Church of Christ, Sunday afternoon. This homestead had been the home of Mr. Bluemly during his entire lifetime, a period of 60 years. Early in life he began taking an active interest in the civic and rural activities of his community, gaining the love of his fellow men by his genial personality and devotion to the worthwhile things of life. His associates and their families and friends filled the house Sunday afternoon and nearly all of them accompanied the funeral party to the Highland Park cemetery, where the interment took place.
The esteem that the community held for Mr. Bluemly was shown by the large masses of flowers that were arranged about the casket and later at the cemetery by Mrs. Harry Whipple and Mrs. Sarah VanGeisen.
The bears were Jud Simmons, John VanGeisen, Robert Lincoln, Herbert Ward, Harry Whipple, Herman Haney, and the musical selections provided by Chandler Haight.

John E. Boltz, 84, died at the I.O.O.F. home in Jackson Wednesday, August 9.
Dr. J. Lee Lewis officiated at the funeral held Friday afternoon from Myers Funeral Home. Interment was in Highland Park Cemetery.
Mr. Boltz is survived by two sisters, Sadie Haynes of Ionia and Emma Strachan of Muir, and one brother, Archie Boltz, of Ionia.
Pallbearers were Hudson Lewis, Leon McQuillan, Kenneth Gillespuy, Raymond Jennings, George Patz, and Ted Bloomer.
BORUP, Evelyn Elenor (WHEELER)

Our precious and courageous mother, Evelyn Elenor Borup, passed away into the arms of our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 2, 2002. She left behind to cherish her memories four daughters: Sharon (Duane) Telfor of Eaton Rapids, Judy (Terry) McPherson of Fenwick, Nikki (Terry) May of Lyons, and Lisa Miller of Ionia; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was born the daughter of Ernest and Leda (Peterson) Wheeler on August 23, 1919 in Ionia.
She married Earl Borup on October 30, 1938 in South Bend, Ind. and he preceded her in death on Feb. 9. 2000.
Country music was a passion for Evelyn. She attended Country Music Jamborees at every opportunity.
She loved to collect and make dolls, and attend yard sales, where she found most of her antiques.
Evelyn was a member of Shiloh Community Church and she attended regularly until her health failed her. She maintained a close relationship with her church and her pastor.
Evelyn and her husband owned and operated the original A&W Drive-in in Ionia, and operated a concession stand at the Ionia Free Fair.
Funeral services for Mrs. Borup will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Shiloh Community Church in Orleans with Pastor Kenneth Harger officiating.
Interment will be in Balcom Cemetery following the service.
Visiting hours will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia.

Emma Jane Boughey, 69, died at her home, 450 Lafayette Street, January 21.
She was born in Norwich, England, March 19, 1877, coming to United States in 1905 and residing near Lowell. She moved to Ionia in 1910 where she has made her home since. She was a charter member of the Moose auxiliary, a member of the Odd Fellows of England and Maccabees of Ionia.
Surviving are her husband, Charles; a daughter, Mrs. Geral dSmith of Ionia; two children, Barbara Jean Smith of Ionia and Harold Rinks of Grand Rapids, and a great granddaughter, Dawn Ann Rinks, of Grand Rapids.
Funeral services will be held from the Bradley funeral home Friday at 2:30 p.m. Temporary interment will be in the mausoleum at Highland Park cemetery. The Rev. Father Emmett Moore will officiate. Pallbearers will be Willliam Rivett, Art Rivett, Jack Rivett, Frank Harknell, and Harry Warner. Burial in Muir cemetery.

John J. Bowerman, 62, known as Jack, of 1059 East Riverside drive, died Friday morning at Ionia County Memorial hospital shortly after admission. Death was due to an apparent heart attack.
He was born in Ionia County May 19, 1913, the son of Clinton and Margaret Kenney Bowerman. He attended the Badder school and SS Peter and Paul academy.
October 1, 1934, he was married to Carmen Poggi at the SS Peter and Paul church.
He had been employed by the Ionia County Road Commission more than 40 years and held the position of a grade foreman at the time of his death.
Surviving are the wife, Carmen, six sons, Jack, Dale, Robert, Gary, Peter and Paul, all of Ionia; daughter Mrs. Mable Ann Erridge of Ionia; 15 grandchildren; and a brother Dan Bowerman of Grand Haven
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Leddick funeral home. Rev. Paul Jetter of Ionia Church of the Nazarene will officiate and interment will be at Highland Park.
The family will be at the funeral home Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

BRADEN - Dallas D. Braden, aged 86, of Lake Odessa, passed away Tuesday evening, August 24, 2004. Dallas was born August 19, 1918 in Lake Odessa, the son of Roy "Dick" Braden and Alta Barker Braden. He graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1937 and from the University of Grand Rapids in 1942 with a B.S. degree in Pharmacy. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was later transferred to the Marines. He served in Guam, Sipan and Tunisia during World War II from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Braden purchased the Nye Drug Store in 1947 and he was married to Norene Deatsman on May 9, 1948. He served on the Ionia County Memorial Hospital Board and was a former counselor at the Ionia Reformatory, and was a director of the Union Bank for 27 years, of which he served as chairman of the board for 2 years. Dallas was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the V.F.W. Jackson-Mutchler Post 4461. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Norene; daughters, Bonnie (Fritz) Frost and Dawn (Kim) Deardorff; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dean Braden. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 PM on Friday, August 27, 2004 at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa with visitation one hour prior to the service. BRODBECK, David J.
Lake Odessa - David J. Brodbeck, 61, of Lake Odessa died Saturday in a Lansing hospital of injuries sustained in an industrial accident.
Born April 21, 1926 in Woodland Township, he was the son of Paul and Florence Jordan Brodbeck. He was graduated from Woodland High School in the Class of 1944 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had lived and farmed in the Lake Odessa area and had also been employed at the BOC Plant of General Motors in Lansing since March 1952.
He was a member of Kilpatrick United Brethren Church.
He was married to Jean J. Jackson April 2, 1955; she died Jan. 31, 1981.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Betty) Bennett, Mrs. Kurt (Barbara) Ackerson and Nancy Brodbeck, all of Lake Odessa, and Mrs. Carl (Gloria) Miller of Holt; a son, Kenneth, of Lake Odessa; and two grandchildren.
Also surviving are six brothers, Richard and Paul of Woodland, Russell, Carroll, Willard and Larry, all of Lake Odessa; five sisters, Patricia Ellcey of Grand Rapids, Helen Miske of Lansing, Mary Ulrey of North Manchester, Ind., Jackie Meade of Marshall, and Carolyn Brecheisen of Woodland; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from Lakewood United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Einard Unseth, the Rev. George Speas, and the Rev. Ward Pierce officiating.
The family will be at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa, Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial for the building fund of Kilpatrick U.B. Church has been established, in care of the funeral home.

BROOKS, Gladys M. (COPE) Ionia Sentinel Standard
Gladys M. Brooks, 78, of Orleans, passed away Friday evening, March 22, 2002, at Ionia County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on July 28, 1923 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Arthur and Anna Marie (Williams) Cope. Gladys has worked for many years at the former Jolly Kidds Togg Factory in Belding. She was married on March 19, 1943 to Dwight Brooks in Ft. Sill, Okla., and he preceded her in death on July 9, 1999.
She was also preceded by her parents; and one brother, Leon Cope.
Gladys is survived by her children, Toni (Russell) Phenix of Ada and Dean (Linda) Brooks of Orleans; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral and committal services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Ken Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the New Hope Church of God in Belding. Visitation was on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Ionia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Orleans Fire Department or the American Lung Association.

Mariyln A. Brooks of Ionia passed away March 2, 1997. Surviving are her husband William of Muir; four sons Norman of Guam, Robert of Muir, Carl of Grand Rapids, Anthony of Muir; three daughters Glori of Washington, Mary Kay of Arizona, Josephine of Muir; four brothers, James Lafferty of Ann Arbor, Philip of Florida, Hollis of Rockford and Calvin of Belding; four sisters Gloria of Ill., Alice of Florida, Cerita of Illinois and Carol of North Carolina. BROWN, CHARLES
The death of Charles Brown occured at his home on the north side, Friday, he had been feeling usually well and only a day or two before was down town greeting friends. Thursday of last week Ed DAVIS and wife of Chippewa Lake, whom he had not seen for twenty-five years and R. B. COWLES and wife visited him and he seemed to be feeling fine and enjoyed the visit. He slept like a child all night, but on arising Friday wa stricken with paralysis and was unconcious till 7 o'clock p. m., when he passed away so peaceful that if his wife and children had not been watching him the change would not have been noticable. Seven years ago while living in Grand Rapids he suffered a stroke of paralysis, since that time he has been unable to do any business, but enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. Mr. Brown was elected County Treasurer in 1892 and held the office two terms. He enlisted in the army and was a member of Co. f. 31st Wisconsin Volunteers. He was born September 27, 1841 at Elton, Cattaraugus Co., New York, and died March 7, 1913, aged seventy-one years, 5 months and eight days. At the age of fifteen he moved with his parents to Green County, Wisconsin where at the age of twenty-five he was united in marriage to Margret HYMERS. In 1867 they moved to a farm three miles south of Belding where he resided for twenty-four years since that time he has resided in Belding with the exception of four years that he lived in Grand Rapids. He is survived by a wife, four children, Mrs. Elmer COOK, Arthur and Vern BROWN of Belding and Mrs. Albert RISCHEL of Grand Rapids, fourteen grrandchildren and one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Marian FULTON of Carson City and Mrs. Charles DUMON of Smyrna. The funeral was largely attended at the late residence, Monday afternoon, Rev. Wm. A. BISS of the Baptist church officiating. Many floral offerings bespoke the esteem in which he was held.

Found in Ionia County News 6/2/1949,page 5 & page 7. Palo: The vicinity was shocked to learn of the death of Lloyd Brown, one of the Palo school bus drivers for several years. Lloyd Brown, 46, Ronald township farmer, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at the Osteopathic hospital in Grand Rapids. Mr. Brown was born May 30, 1903, in Palo and spent all his life in Ronald township. Surviving are his wife, Goldie (Musser); five children, Harold, Bettie, Pearline, Carline, and Feda (sic), all at home; his father, Arthur of Edmore; four brothers, Lee and Leslie of Grand Rapids, Alton of Ionia and Clarence of Palo; and one sister, Mrs. Jake Carpenter of Portland. Rev. Lewis Herrick officiated the funeral sevice held Sunday afternoon. Burial was in Palo cemetery.

Mrs. Viva J. Brown, 72, of Ionia formerly of Lansing passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002 at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on June 2, 1929 in Remus, the daughter of Irwin C. and Retah Roda (Swartz) Brown. Viva worked at the Casanova Restaurant in Lansing and the Meijer in Ionia for eight years.
Surviving are one daughter, Roxanne (Larry) Thelen of Ionia; two sons, Gary Brown of California and Larry (Lianna) Gladding of Lyons; three grandchildren, J.R., Tara and Lacy; one brother, Newt (Bonnie) Brown of Remus; one sister, Subinah Howe of Morley; and several nieces and nephews.
Viva was preceded in death by six brothers.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at the Cook Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Carol Meeder from the First Christian Church officiating.
Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Rich Street Chapel of Cook Funeral Home in Ionia.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Arthritis Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Kate Burch died at the home of her son, John Currigan in Lyons Friday about 4:30 p.m.
She was born in Ionia County March 12, 1864, and has lived nearly all her life in Lyons. She is a member of the Lyons Baptist church, and Women's Relief Corps.
She is survived by a son, John, of Lyons; a grandson, John Jr., a granddaughter, Mrs. Vern Gallup, and one great-grandson, Michael Currigan.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. form the Lyons Baptist church with the Rev. Faulkner Mercer officiating. Interment will be at the Lyons cemetery.

Portland - Rodney L. Burhans, 81, of Portland died Sept. 13, 1997.
He was born May 13, 1916 in Portland. He was a World War II veteran of the Navy, Seaman First Class and retired from Oldsmobile.
He is survived by his wife, LaDonna of Portland; four daughters, JoAnn (Walter) Zimmerman of Lyons, Sandra (Eugene) VanSiclen of Portland, Carolyn (LaVern) Ely of Woodland and Anna Repsher of Auburndale, Fla.; six sons, Charles (Linda) and Ronald (LuAnn) Burhans, both of Lyons, Richard (Carrie) and Rodney (Patricia) Burhans, both of Portland, Michael (Charlene) of Ionia and Keith Burhans of Grand Ledge; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Odessa Twp. Lady Laid to Rest Friday The Late Mrs. Bushnell Was Greatly Esteemed by All Who Knew Her
Loretta Demaree was born in the township of Clarence, Erie County, N. Y., June 5, 1831, and died at her home in Odessa township, March 1, aged 84 years, 8 months, 25 days.
When she was five years of age the family moved to Michigan and settled in the township of Atlas, Genesee county where she lived until her marriage to Charles M. Bushnell, October 15, 1849. Soon after their marriage they came to Campbell township and settled on the road known as the Clinton Trail where they lived until the spring of 1865 when they moved to the farm in Odessa township which has been her home for more than 50 years. Nine children were born to this union six of whom are living, Lewis, Lester, Joseph and Edson of Odessa, Mrs. Cyrus Alden of Lansing, Mrs. Warren Johnson of Lake Odessa. Other relatives are five grand children, five great grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Norman Champlin of Clarksville, and one brother-in-law, Delos Bushnell, who has been a member of her family the greater part of his life since his childhood, also a number of nieces and nephews.
Since the death of her husband December 2, 1904 she has been most tenderly cared for by her children who have done all in their power to make her declining years pleasant. She was often heard to say, "How good the children are to me, what would I do without them."
Early in life she gave her heart to God and her daily life showed she had been to Jesus and learned of Him. A quiet, unassuming, home loving woman yet her heart and hand were always open to those she could cheer or help in any way.
When the Congregational society was first formed in Clarksville she united there, for several years she has not been able to attend but she has always lived a consistent Christian life with a pleasant smile and kind word for everyone.
During the last weeks of her life she was a great sufferer but was never heard to complain was always patient and resigned.
Mrs. Bushnell is one of the last of those who moved into the forest and endured the trials and hardships of the early pioneers to make for themselves a home. She was respected by all who knew her and will be sadly missed in our community.
The funeral was held at the residence Friday afternoon, Rev. Wooley of Saranac officiating.

BUXTON, Harold J.

Harold J. Buxton, 82, of Ionia, went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, March 27, 2002, in Ionia. He was born April 29, 1919 in Lake Odessa, the son of Herbert and Maude (Cox) Buxton. He would go on to marry Lozia Reed in 1942.
He was employed as a Corrections Officer by the Michigan Department of Corrections for 33 years. He owned and operated McQuillan Lawn Mower Repair and Sales for 30 years. He worked for Ionia Dial-A-Ride for 8 years.
Harold was a WWII Veteran of the Air Force where he was an Airplane Mechanic.
He is survived by his son, James (Marilee) Buxton, of Ionia; daughters Ferol (Robert) Ball of Lake Odessa; Jeannette (Lee) West of Lyons; brother Herbert (Lillian) Buxton of Lake Odessa; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lozia in 1999 and a brother, Ellsworth.
Funeral services for Mr. Buxton will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Harley Koehn officiating. Interment Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa.
Visitation is 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to American Lung Association in care of the funeral home.
