Lake Odessa - Herman W. Eastman, 79, of 275 E. Tupper Lake Road, Lake Odessa, passed away Wednesday October 10, 1990 at Blodget Memorial Medical Center.
Mr. Eastman was born on March 29, 1911 in Sunbfield, the son of Wilford and Rosie (Collier) Eastman. He attended the Figg Rural School.
He was married to Vivian Stambaugh on January 9, 1937. He lived in Sunfield until 1946 when he moved to Lake Odessa.
He was employed at Michigan Magnetics, in Vermontville, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Sebewa Church of God. Mr. Eastman is survived by his wife Vivian; one daughter, Joyce Eastman of Denver, Colorado; one son, John Eastman of Lake Odessa; two grandchildren; two brothers, Nelson and Lennis, both of Sunfield; one sister, Bertha King of Cement City.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur, Roy, Milo, and Forrest.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 13 at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa with Reverend George Aton officiating. Burial was at Sunfield Cemetery.
EDWARDS, Lawrence “Larry”

Lawrence “Larry” Edwards, beloved husband and father, of Lake Odessa passed away at his home on Fri., April 5, 2002, at the age of 81.
Larry was born in Flushing on Feb. 23, 1921, to Don and Vivia (Dow) Edwards. He graduated from Mary Crapo High School in Swartz Creek in 1941. Larry married Grace Perkins in Durand on Oct. 17, 1943.
While serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, he and Grace moved to Kansas City. After his discharge they returned to Swartz Creek and farmed until 1956. For the next 35 years he farmed in the Lake Odessa.
He is survived by Grace, his loving wife of 59 years; his daughter, Bobbie (Russ) Campeau of Clarksville; his son, Larry (Elly) Edwards of Florida; his grandchildren, Russ (Stacey) Campeau Jr., Jim (Nicole) Campeau, Larry Campeau, Jamie (Mike) Fletcher and Andy Edwards; his great-grandchildren, Tabitha Ann Campeau, Riki Edwards, Rebecca Ann Campeau and Rayann Campeau; his former daughter-in-law, Connie Edwards; his special friends, Carl and Edith Grashius; and many other loving relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother and sister, Alton Edwards and Marguerite Herin.
At Larry’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral services. There will be a remembrance luncheon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sat. May 5, 2002, at the home of Bobbi and Russ Campeau. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barry Community Hospice.
Arrangements were handled by the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa.

EITELBUS, Nettie

Funeral services for Mrs. Nettie Eitelbus of Grand Rapids were held in the Baptist church Monday afternoon at three o’clock.
Mrs. Eitelbus was the daughter of Herbert and Anna Edwards and was born and raised in Bushnell township. After her marriage to Norman Eitelbus they resided in a farm north of Palo. Some time after her husband’s death she moved to Grand Rapids where she has since made her home. She leaves three daughters, Mildred, Anna and Margie, and one son, Fred, and several grandchildren. Other relatives are two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Waite of Ionia, Mrs. Stanley Gilmore of Ronald, two brothers, Evelyn Edwards of Ronald and Harry Edwards of Bushnell.

ELY, Bernard R.

Headline: Veteran Ionia G.T. Agent Dies Friday A.M.
Bernard Ely, 60, for 36 years Ionia Grand Trunk railroad station agent and for 38 years an employee of the railroad, died at his home at 229 Lafayette Street, at 7:30 o’clock Friday morning.
Mr. Ely had been seriously ill for two weeks following a heart attack and had been retired because of ill health for the past two years.
A native of Muir, Mr. Ely was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Ely of Muir and was born August 20, 1880, at Muir. He was graduated from Muir high school in 1898.
In 1901 Mr. Ely was employed by the Grand Trunk railroad at Muir as a station employee. After one year he moved to Ionia where he continued his railroad education in the Ionia Grand Trunk depot. In 1903 he was appointed Ionia station agent and he continued as such until his failing health forced his partial retirement nearly three years ago.
In 1903 Mr. Ely was married to Miss Bessie M. Smith of Muir. He was a member of the Ionia Presbyterian church and the Ionia Masonic Lodge.
Surviving besides Mrs. Ely are two brothers, Sherman J. Ely of Lansing and Roscoe Ely of Ludington.
Funeral services are to be held from the Myers funeral home in Ionia Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Adam J. Westmaas will officiate and interment will be at the North Plains cemetery north of Muir.

ELY, Bess S.

Mrs. Bess S. Ely, 81, died unexpectedly Saturday at her home at 138˝ East Main Street.
She was born May 26, 1881 in Elm Hall and moved to Muir with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Charles D. Smith in 1883. After graduation from Muir high school, she was married to Bernard R. Ely, June 3, 1903 and came to Ionia to make her home. Mr. Ely, who was employed as clerk and agent of Grand Trunk Railroad 38˝ years, died January 14, 1941.
Mrs. Ely was a member of First Presbyterian church, Women’s association of the church and Martha circle.
She is survived by four nieces, Mrs. S. W. Allgier of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. E. H. B. Mueller of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. G. A. Rawling of Traverse City, and Mrs. Jess N. Rosenberg of Berkley, Calif.
Funeral service will be at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Myers funeral home with the Rev. Wilfred G. Sawyier officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at North Plains cemetery.
A memorial fund for the church has been established.

Headline: Mrs. Ely, 74, A Pioneer of Lyons Dead
Was Widow of Former Muir Postmaster; Born on Farm Near Muir, the Child
of Early Settlers.
Death claimed in Lansing Monday morning, Mrs. Madora Ely, 74, a pioneer of Lyons township and the daughter of Jay and Julia Ross, who were among the early settlers in the vicinity north of Muir.
Funeral services will probably be held from a Lansing funeral home Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock and short service and interment will follow the same day at North Plains cemetery.
Mrs. Ely, widow of the late William C. Ely, who died in Muir while postmaster there, was reared on a farm three and one-half miles northeast of Muir, now belonging to the George West estate. Early in her girlhood she affiliated with the Presbyterian church at Muir and as long as she lived in that vicinity was counted among the energetic workers for every branch of the denomination. While there she was a member of the Muir Library club and retained this membership until she moved to Alma a few years ago. Later she became a resident of Ludington and the past few months had lived in Lansing.
B. R. Ely, of Ionia, Sherman J. Ely, of Lansing, and Roscoe Ely, of Ludington, three sons, survive. She also leaves one brother, J. E. Ross of Muir, the last surviving member of that family.

EMELANDER, Beatrice M. (ROWLEY)

Belding - Beatrice M. Emelander, 83 of Belding died March 21, 1997.
She was born May 26, 1913 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Hazel (Peasley) Rowley.
She married George Emelander Sept. 5, 1969 in Saranac.
She is survived by two sons, Charles and Diane Dalton and Jerry and Karen Veltman of Arizona; four daughters, Jean Elliston of New Mexico, Nancy Moore of New Mexico, Mary Mileski of Saranac and Judy Conner of Saranac; two step-sons, Garret and Cathy Emelander of Belding and Donald Emelander of Belding; 26 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Feb. 27, 1997 and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. James Micheff officiating. Interment will be at the Easton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

George (Jack) Emelander aged 75 of Easton Twp. passed away Feb. 27, 1997 at Laurels of Fulton. He was born March 8, 1921 in Ionia the son of George and Effie Bloomer Emelander. He was a WW II veteran, he worked for Ionia County Road Commission from 1942-1950, worked for Gibsons from 1946-1955. He farmed Easton Twp. since 1951. He married Beatrice Rowley in Saranac Sept. 8, 1969. She survives him in Easton Twp. Also Garret and Catherine Emelander of Belding, Donald Emelander of Belding, Stepchildren Charles and Diane Dalton of Woodmere, Nancy Moore of New Mexico, Mary Mileski of Saranac, Judy Conner of Saranac. Foster Daughter Gloria Espinzoa of Chicago. Sisters Susie Hanline of Ionia, Ann Wetherbee of Ionia. 26 Grandchildren, 47 Great Grandchildren and 6 Great Great Grandchildren. He was proceded in death by 4 brothers Harry, Jake, Dowie, and Tony, and 2 sisters Jessie Thomas and Jennie Matkoskie. Funeral Services for Mr. Emelander were held March 6 at 11:00 A.M. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Donald Wells and Pastor James Micheff officiating. Interment Easton Cemetery. ENDRES, Marie

Mrs. Marie Endres, 81, 424 Center St., died at two o’clock Thursday morning, Jan. 15, in the Ionia Convalescent Home where she had been a patient for several days.
A resident of Ionia for many years, she was born August 31, 1866.
Surviving her is a daughter, Mrs. Emma O’Mara, of Lake Odessa, and a niece, Mrs. Anna Boyle, of Grand Rapids.
Mrs. Endres was a member of SS. Peter and Paul church and Rosary Society. Rosary will be recited at 8:00 o’clock Friday evening, Jan. 16, at Myers Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 9:00 o’clock Saturday morning, Jan. 17, in SS. Peter and Paul church. Burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Philipp Endres died at 11:30 o'clock this morning at his home on West Washington street, where he has lived for fourteen years. He has been in poor health for two years, but was up and about most of the time, and a critical condition was not looked for. Sunday morning he was up and dressed until noon when he began to feel sick. He went to bed and steadily grew worse. Drs. McCann and Barnes were called but he died at the above hour today. Consumption of the stomach is given as the ailment. Mr. Endres was 75 years of age Jan. 3, 1907, and came to Ionia about {unreadable in the copy I have} from North Dorr, Mich., and successfully operated the Ionia brewery. He for 12 years was a good citizen, prominent among the German societies of the city and until his physical infirmities began to take hold of him was active and {unreadable}. He was married in {unreadable} to Miss Anna Wolf, who died in 1879. He married again in 1880 to Miss Margaret {unreadable}, who survives. There are four living children, Mrs. Frank Biehler, Ionia, Mrs. Robert Brese, Grand Rapids, Philip Endres, Jr., and Johnnie Endres. Also Mrs. Henry Krieger, adopted daughter by his first wife. The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock Thursday.

Mrs. Norman Etson Passes Away Had Spent Her Entire Life in the Village of Lyons
Mrs. Norman Etson, who had been in failing health the past year and a half, passed away last Friday night at her home on the west side of the river.
Mary Currigan was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Currigan and was born in Lyons September 15, 1868. On September 15, 1891, she was united in marriage to Norman Etson, and had spent her entire life here, and with her husband had resided in the present home since 1893. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. James Hopkins, living just west of town; two grandchildren, Mary Lou and Jimmy Hopkins, and one brother, John Currigan, who resides in the house where she was born.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in SS. Peter & Paul church in Ionia conducted by Fr. John Fons. Interment was made in Mt. Olivet cemetery, where Fr. Farrel had charge of the commitment service. The bearers were John DeGraaf, Jerome Harper, Arnold Fox and Charles Russell.

EVANS, Richard

The funeral for Richard Evans was held this morning from the church of SS. Peter & Paul at nine o’clock, the remains arriving here from Detroit last night. Mr. Evans was an uncle of Mrs. W. G. Longe, and was for many years a resident of Muir. He has been in Detroit since last fall where he was scaling lumber for the Hayes Automobile company. He was 62 years of age and leaves a widow. He was stricken with apoplexy the day before his death and failed to rally. The pallbearers were James Scully, T. A. Carten, Anthony Scully, Thomas McGannon, Joseph Poole and Frank Wirtz.
