Three Year Old Child Plays Around Load of Grain: Falls Under Wheels as horses Start - Head Crushed.
Little Katherine Jackson, the three year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Jackson, went to the barn last Friday to be with her father, to whom she was very much attached.
Mr. Jackson had a load of grain ready to take to market and had gone to the house to make some changes perparatory to going to town. The team and load were left in the care of older children who did not know of the little girl's presence. She had climbed upon the wheel when the horses started, and throwing her off the wheel ran over and crushed her head on the back side, causing death after only a breath or two.
Undertaker Weed was called and put the little one in a presentable condition and the funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon.
Many relatives and friends of the family were present and the little form was laid to rest in Clarksville cemetery.

JACKSON, Samuel Whitney

Samuel Whitney Jackson, youngest son of George and Jane Jackson was born in Augusta, Canada December 13, 1846 and departed this life at his farm home in Campbell Township, Ionia County, Michigan Tuesday, December 4, 1928 at tha age of 81 years, 11 months and 21 days. He came to Michigan and settled on a farm in Odessa Township in 1871 where he lived seven year, and then moved to the present home. He was married to Julia Shindel December 25, 1878 and their entire life was spent on the farm where he died. To this union wa born ten children, all of whom survive him. He leaves to mourn his loss, a devoted wife, five daughters, five sons, two sisters, one brother and thirty three grandchildren besides a gost of other relatives and friends. The daughters are Mrs. Hester Tucker of Saranac, Mrs Sarah Roush, and Mrs. May Mutschler of South Boston, Mrs. Florence Stahl and Mrs. Loretta Hefflebower of Campbell. The five sons are Joel and Benjamin of Odessa, Augustus of Campbell, and George and Albertus at home. He was converted when a young man and has ever remained true to his faith and was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church of West Berlin at the time of his death. He was a devoted husband and father, always ready to lend a helping hand when it was needed and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and neighbors.

Anna A. Jeffrey, 82, of Sheridan passed away on Sun., March 10, 2002 at Metron of Greenville.
Mrs. Jeffrey was born Aug. 30, 1919 in Lyons, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Badder) White. She went on to marry Guy Jeffrey on May 10, 1937 in Fenwick.
She is survived by her four daughters, Shelby Waite of Sheridan, Sharon (Clare) Brooks of Stanton, Alice (Lyle) Blaisdell of Stanton and Donna Horn of Sheridan; two sons, Marvin (Cheryl) Jeffrey of Sidney and Marlin (Rose) Jeffrey of Belding; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Clifford of Belding and Bernice Johnson of Fenwick; and one brother, Melbert (Rosemary) White of Sheridan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Jeffrey on April 4, 1985; a sister, Bertha Emmons; and a brother, Robert White.
Mrs. Jeffrey has been a lifelong resident of the Sheridan area. She dearly loved her family and friends and always enjoyed being a part of their activities.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Stebbins and Simpson Funeral Home in Sheridan. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday at the Stebbins and Simpson Funeral Home at Sheridan with Rev. Charles Bellinger officiating. Interment at the Sheridan Cemetery, Sheridan.
The family suggests memorial considerations to Gratiot Home Care.

JEFFERY, Charles “Chuck”

Charles “Chuck” Jeffery Jr., 21, of Carson City formerly of Lyons, passed away unexpectedly April 11, 2002 in Grand Rapids.
He was born Oct. 31, 1980 in Ionia, the son of Charles Jeffery and Patricia (Curtis) Jeffery.
He is survived by his father, Charles (Dion) Jeffery of Vestaburg and mother, Patricia (Eugene) Zander of Lyons; his fiancée, Rachel Shattuck of Carson City; his infant son, Trystyn Jeffery of Carson City; grandparents, Russell and Zella Curtis of Saranac, Barbara Jeffery of Pewamo, Sylvester and Beatrice Zander of Lyons; brothers, Matthew Zander of Lyons; Charles and Kenneth House of Vestaburg; one sister Tonya Jeffery (fiancé Robert Stanton) of Lyons; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Shaun Jeffery in 1984; and his grandfather, Clarence Jeffery in 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday at the Lyons Baptist Church with Committal Services and interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday at the Lake Funeral Home-Hull Memorial Chapel in Muir.
Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to a trust fund established for Trystyn Jeffery.

JENKS, Douglas E.
Douglas E. Jenks, aged 84, of Belding, passed away Thursday evening, July 18, 2002 at Metron of Belding Nursing Home. He was born on October 20, 1917 on the family farm in Grattan Township, the son of Floyd E. and Cora (Douglas) Jenks. Cora died during the birth of her second son. Floyd later married Agnes Douglas, who became a loving mother to Doug and his brother, Gordon. Doug graduated from Belding High School with the class of 1935. He owned the State Farm Insurance Agency in Belding for over 50 years. Doug received many awards for his work as an outstanding insurance representative. He had served as President of the Belding Hospital Board and was active in the Covered Village Mall Owners Association. He was married in 1941 to Dorothy Kropf, and she preceded him in death in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother. Doug is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gordon E. and Emmaline Jenks of Cascade; his nieces and nephews, Patricia and Bernard Krampe of Ada, Paul E. and Lois Jenks of Chattanooga, TN; and seven great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor David A. Oliver of Ashley Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Otisco Township Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the service at the Ashley Baptist Church on 10 Mile Rd. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashley Baptist Church.

Johnson, Mrs. Emily (Phillips) (Van Warmer)

THE ADVERTISER, Saranac, MI, Thursday, March 5, 1914, p 4: "Emily Phillips was born in Monroe County, New York, November 12, 1837 and died at her home in Saranac, Michigan, March 2, 1914. When about eighteen years of age she was married to John Van Warmer. When the war broke out he enlisted and was taken sick while in the service and sent home. He died soon after he came home.
She afterwards married Richard Coulson and they moved from New York to Berlin Township where they resided until Mr. Coulson's death which occurred February 1, 1901. She did all that a mother could do for Mr. Coulson's children. On April 8, 1902, she was married to Rev. S. Johnson and has since resided in Saranac. She was a faithful and loving wife and mother. Her home was her delight and she gave it and the members of her household her very best endeavors, tireless in exerting every effort to make her home all that it implies. She was for a number of years a faithful and consistant member of the Free Methodist Church.
She leaves to mourn, a husband, one sister, Mrs. Edmond Blossom of Sebewa; one brother, Wm. Phillips of Evert; a number of step-children and other relatives and friends.
As her life has passed unto the joy of her Lord, the memory of her life must prove a perpetual inspiration. The funeral services were held from the Free Methodist church on Wednesday, conducted by Rev. D. G. Biggs."

Former Board of Water and Light employee, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2001. He was born on April 21, 1913 in Portland, MI, the son of Loyal R. and Lizzie (Devereax) Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie A. Jones. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Marjorie Jones of Central Lake; brother-in-law, Charles Baird; brother-in-law, Richard Baird; niece, Carol Beal of Berrien Springs; niece, Phyllis Jones-Clayton of Livonia; niece, Erin Baird of Mason; niece, Carolyn Sadler of Eaton Rapids; nephew, Robert Jones of Florida; and nephew, David Jones. Funeral services will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel at 2 p.m.Sunday, April 1, 2001 with the Pastor David Yeagley officiating. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church Community Services Center. IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD, MI; 1-30-1988: "Buggy Rides - 100 Years Ago - Mrs. Don Jones died on Sunday evening after a brief illness.......Mrs. Jones was 59 years of age on the 22 of October last. She was a daughter of Samuel Dexter, who made the original entry of the land where Ionia now stands in 1833.......She was one of nine children, five daughters and four sons.
Three sisters and one brother survive her, vis: Mrs. Alonze Sessions and Mrs. Jonathan Tibbitts of Ionia; Mrs. Prudence Tower of Grand Rapids and Stephen F. Dexter of Evart.
Three brothers and one sister died before her, vis: Horace, Lorenzo, and John C. Dexter, and Mrs. Ellsworth of Sycamore, Ill."

Deceased was a most excellent and amiable lady, who has lived in Ionia since it consisted of a mere hamlet and she was a little girl of five years, and it may be truthfully said that she numbered among her friends all those whose acquaintance she made during that long period of more than fifty years. She was a noble type of woman, whose world was her home, whose whole life was devoted with a single-hearted purpose to her family and her friends. Her influence for good was felt throughout the community, which will extend its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family."

Sheridan - Jacob C. "Chuck" Jones, 69, 425 Evergreen St., Sheridan, passed away Saturday, April 26, 1997, at Ionia County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 2, 1928, in St. Louis to Frederick and Mable Mae Pepper Jones.
On Aug. 10, 1974, at St. Louis, he married Pauline Witherspoon.
Mr. Jones had been a resident of Sheridan since 1988, formerly of Belding. He retired from Printco, Greenville. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, a life member of the VFW Post 5065, Sheridan, and an member of East Superior Christian Church, Alma.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Jones; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Sandra Jones of Mason, Jacob and Tonya Jones of Elsie; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mae Jones, Linda and Lewis Potthof, Kathy and Jose Mendoza, all of Lansing, Tamara and John Hensley of Perrinton; three stepchildren, Reginald and Glenda Bloomquist of St. Louis, Larena and Pete Mason-Rzadca of Howard City, Ralynn and Craig Hansen of Greenville, 22 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four brothers and sisters, Lyle and Renate Jones of Perrinton, Isadore Damon of Breckenridge, Laura Allen of Ithaca, and Ruth and Dan Praay of St. Louis.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Stebbins and Simpson Funeral Home, Sheridan, with the Rev. Gerald Burns officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 5065 of Sheridan.
Visitation will be today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred C. Jones, 99 of Belding passed away June 10, 1997. Surviving are one son Merton of Belding; 4 grandchildren; 9 great grand children; one brother Merton Hansen of Blanchard. Funeral services were held June 12 with burial in Rest Haven Memory Gardens. Arrangements by Johnson Funeral Home.
JORDAN, Kathleen B. (TASKER)
Lake Odessa - Kathleen B. Jordan, 80, of Lake Odessa, died Tuesday, April 5, 1988 at Lowell Medical Center.
Mrs. Jordan was born on September 22, 1907, in Lake Odessa, the daughter of Walter and Nora (Dell) Tasker.
She was married to J. Ralph Jordan on April 4, 1926 in Lake Odessa.
She attended the West Berlin Wesleyan Church and was a member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Jordan is survived by her husband, Ralph; and a brother, Louis Tasker of Grand Ledge.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 9, at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa, with the Rev. Kenneth Hill officiating. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery.

THE IONIA SENTINEL, MICH.; October 7, 1886: "Death of Dr. H. M. Joy. The entire community was shocked at the painful intelligence that Rev. H. M. Joy, D.D., formerly for several years pastor of the M. E. church in this city had received such severe injuries in a runaway accident that he has died from the effects of them. He had been transferred from the Michigan to the Indiana conference and preached his first and last sermon at Greencastle on Sunday last. The accident occurred on Wednesday. His remains was brought to Grand Rapids for interment, and the funeral took place at ten o'clock tomorrow, Saturday morning.
Jr. Joy's sad and untimely death will cause widespread grief through Michigan where he enjoyed the love and confidence of all who knew him. His sincere, unaffected piety, his simple-hearted zeal in the cause of the church, his eloquence; the genuineness and almost child-like simplicity of his character, his quiet unostentatious manners, his kindness and earnest desire to do good in the community where he resided endeared him to all who came within his genial influence. His bereaved family will have the heart-felt sympathy of Ionians, many of whom feel as poignant grief as if they had lost a member of their own household."
