The following is from the Colorado Springs Gazette of last Thursday: "In the death of Garrett Quackenboss yesterday afternoon, one of the oldest pioneers of this section passed away. "Mr.Quackenboss' death followed an illness of several months. He was 79 years of age. Pending the arrival of his son-in-law from the east, the funeral arrangements have not been made. Mr Quackenboss is survived by his wife, a son, J.E. Quackenboss, and a married daughter, whose home is in Detroit. The members of his family were at his bedside when the end came. "Mr. Quackenboss came from Vermont and settled in Colorado Springs 33 years ago. He was a carpenter and builder for many years and one of the best known residents of the city. The family home is at 321 South Weber street. Of late years Mr. Quackenboss had not been actively engaged. He accumulated considerable property and retired from business some time ago. He was a prominent member of the First M.E. church."
Deceased was, up to the time he went to Colorado, a resident of this village [Portland] and will be remembered by our older readers residing here at that time. He resided on the lot on which the editor's house now stands and owned the property where G.W.Allen's store now is, where he conducted a meat market. He was one of the early pioneers of the section of the country where he died, and once told the writer that he erected on contract the first frame builidng ever built at Manitou, a city a short distance from Colorado Springs. The Observer understands that he was a wealthy man.
